The South Asia Co-operative Environment Programme (SACEP) delegation, led by Director General Mr. Norbu Wangchuk, actively engaged with a range of international development partners and institutions during UNFCCC COP29. The discussions focused on fostering future collaborations to assist SACEP’s member countries in addressing the escalating challenges of climate change.
In meetings with prominent organizations such as the Initiative for Climate Action Transparency (ICAT), the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (UNESCAP), The World Bank , the Asian Development Bank (ADB), the NDC Partnership, and the United Nations Environment Programme World Conservation Monitoring Centre (UNEP-WCMC), etc and the SACEP delegation explored avenues for collaborative action. These discussions centered on aligning efforts to support South Asian nations through capacity-building programs, innovative climate solutions, and enhanced access to technical and financial resources.
Director General Mr. Wangchuk emphasized the importance of these partnerships, stating, “Collaboration with global and regional institutions is essential to empower our member countries to combat climate change effectively. Together, we can drive innovative solutions, mobilize resources, and foster resilience across South Asia.”
The delegation also showcased SACEP’s flagship initiatives, such as the Plastic-free Rivers and Seas for South Asia (PLEASE) project, as examples of regional approaches to addressing pressing environmental challenges.
These engagements at COP29 highlight SACEP’s commitment to forging impactful partnerships that empower South Asian nations to meet their climate commitments under the Paris Agreement while fostering sustainable development and environmental stewardship. By working closely with these esteemed institutions, SACEP aims to build a resilient and sustainable future for the region.
