SACEP and CEA - Sri Lanka Strengthen Regional Collaboration to Tackle Environmental Challenges in South Asia

SACEP Director General Mr. Norbu Wangchuk met with the Chairman of the Central Environmental Authority (CEA), Prof. Tilak Hewawasam, on 9th July 2025 in Colombo to enhance regional environmental cooperation and discuss joint priorities.

During the meeting, Mr. Wangchuk shared updates on SACEP’s ongoing initiatives, including the PLEASE Project on plastic pollution and the regional air quality management efforts . The discussions highlighted the urgent need to establish a regional platform to address air quality challenges collectively across South Asia, ensuring consistent monitoring, forecasting, and data sharing among countries.

The CEA emphasized the importance of building technical capacity in Sri Lanka, requesting comprehensive training for their staff. SACEP reaffirmed its commitment to supporting Sri Lanka’s environmental priorities, encouraging the CEA to communicate specific needs in plastic waste management, air quality improvement, and other priority areas requiring regional support.

This collaborative discussion marks another significant step toward achieving a cleaner, healthier South Asia, reinforcing SACEP’s dedication to working hand-in-hand with its member countries to address shared environmental challenges.
