At the UNFCCC 29th Conference of the Parties (COP 29) in Baku, Azerbaijan on 13th November 2024, Mr. Norbu Wangchuk, Director General of the South Asia Co-operative Environment Programme (SACEP), participated in a high-level event titled "Mountains in Peril: Addressing Loss and Damage in the Himalayas." Hosted by the Government of Nepal, this event featured the Honorable Ramchandra Paudel, President of Nepal, as the guest of honor.
The event focused on the urgent threats facing mountain regions due to climate change, including heightened risks from extreme climate-induced events and disasters. In his address, Mr. Wangchuk emphasized the critical importance of mountain ecosystems in supporting biodiversity, water resources, and the livelihoods of millions across the region. He called for enhanced regional collaboration and substantial financial investments to protect these essential natural resources. Highlighting SACEP's commitment to fostering regional cooperation and sustainable environmental management, Mr. Wangchuk stressed the need for global partnerships and collective action to combat climate change impacts and bolster the resilience of mountain communities.
