Meeting with delegates of the member countries of SACEP


During the 3rd session of the Intergovernmental Negotiating Committee (INC-3) in Nairobi, Kenya, on November 17,2023 the Director General of the South Asia Co-operative Environment Programme (SACEP) Ms. Rokeya Khaton led a roundtable discussion with delegates from its member countries. This significant meeting took place at the UN premises and included representatives from UNOPS-SL (United Nations Office for Project Services - Sri Lanka) and the Marine Environment Protection Authority of Sri Lanka.

The session featured a comprehensive presentation by Mr. Kapila Rajapaksha, the Environment Specialist of the Project Implementation Unit (PIU) of SACEP, outlining the current status of the ongoing PLEASE Project. The presentation covered project updates, achievements, and future plans. The decisions arising from this meeting were facilitated by Mr. Joseph Ese Akpokodje, the Senior Environment Specialist of the World Bank.

This collaborative effort underscores the commitment of member countries to the PLEASE Project, demonstrating a shared dedication to addressing environmental challenges in South Asia. Such multilateral engagements within the broader context of international conferences like INC-3 are crucial for fostering regional cooperation and achieving the objectives of transnational environmental initiatives

During the meeting, participants delved into potential challenges and future constraints that may arise. The group engaged in a thoughtful discussion on foreseeable issues and anticipated obstacles that could impact the project or initiative. The discussion addressed the potential stumbling blocks, limitations, and hurdles that might be encountered down the line.
