Collaborative Efforts for Coral Reef Conservation: SACEP, CORDIO, and IUCN Discuss Regional Assessment for South Asia

Today, (July 16, 2024), representatives of the South Asia Cooperative Environment Programme (SACEP), under the leadership of Ms. Rokeya Khaton, Director General, participated in a virtual meeting hosted by Coastal Oceans Research and Development in the Indian Ocean (CORDIO) and IUCN. CORDIO East Africa and IUCN are currently engaged in a project aimed at assisting regions worldwide in conducting assessments using the coral reef Red List of Ecosystems (RLE). This global standard is instrumental in assessing the conservation status of ecosystems at local, national, regional, and global levels. Through systematic monitoring, it enables the identification of ecosystem degradation and evaluates the positive impacts of conservation efforts. The meeting explored the potential for conducting a regional coral reef RLE assessment for South Asia in partnership with SACEP.
