On the sidelines of UNFCCC COP29, the South Asia Co-operative Environment Programme (SACEP) delegation, led by Director General Mr. Norbu Wangchuk, held a bilateral meeting with Ms. Aisha Humera Chaudhry, Additional Secretary (In-charge) at the Ministry of Climate Change and Environmental Coordination, Pakistan. As the National Focal Point of SACEP, Ms. Chaudhry plays a pivotal role in guiding regional environmental initiatives within Pakistan.
The meeting served as an opportunity to update Pakistan on SACEP’s ongoing and upcoming activities in the South Asian region. Key topics included the implementation of the Plastic-free Rivers and Seas for South Asia (PLEASE) project, advancements in capacity-building initiatives, and regional efforts to strengthen sustainable consumption and production practices.
Director General Mr. Wangchuk highlighted the importance of Pakistan’s active participation in SACEP’s initiatives, emphasizing its strategic role in driving regional environmental progress. He noted, “Pakistan’s leadership and engagement as the National Focal Point are invaluable in addressing shared environmental challenges. Our collaboration is key to ensuring the success of SACEP’s regional programs.”
Ms. Chaudhry reiterated Pakistan’s commitment to regional environmental cooperation and expressed her support for SACEP’s efforts in tackling pressing issues such as marine litter, biodiversity loss, and climate change adaptation. She also emphasized the importance of aligning regional initiatives with Pakistan’s national climate goals under its Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs).
This bilateral meeting underscored the shared commitment between SACEP and Pakistan to drive impactful regional initiatives and SACEP remains dedicated to working closely with its member countries to build a sustainable and resilient future for the region.
