World Environment Day Webinar: Biodiversity and Environment Protection during Pandemic Outbreak of Covid 19

To mark the World Environment Day, SACEP and its international partners including International Society of Waste Management, Air and Water (ISWMAW), and United Nations Centre for Regional Development organized a webinar on Biodiversity and Environment Protection during Pandemic Outbreak of Covid 19, on 5th June, 2020. In this webinar, speakers addressed the challenges that global biodiversity is facing today. It was pointed out that more than 4 billion people depends on biodiversity for their livelihood and more than 1 million animals and plants are at the risk of extinction and therefore conserving biodiversity and taking protective actions is crucial for the world sustainability. Nature based solutions are the best way forward. It was also observed that loss of biodiversity will increase the number of zoonosis cases.

Director General of SACEP, Dr. Abas Basir highlighted the impacts of marine litter on biodiversity and mentioned that marine litter has ecological, economical and social impacts and governments are required to take specific measures to tackle this emerging environmental challenge. Moving towards circular economy and adopting 3RS can help countries to overcome this challenge.
