On the third day of the workshop (17 July 2019) the participants of the eight member countries of SACEP who attended the ‘Second Sub Regional workshop on Preparation of Status Report and Sub-regional Roadmap for Implementing the Global Waste Management Goals towards Addressing SDGs in South Asia’ had the opportunity to visit the large scale composting facility at Panchabati, Narayanganj city, 17 Km Southeast of Dhaka where the participants were able to gain a thorough knowledge on Public Private Partnership programme related to waste management in Bangladesh.
The above compost plant which started its operation in August 2016 was built on an area covering 4046 Sq. m Square meters (1acre) of land and has the facilities such as; Sorting Ground ,49 compost boxes,10 Maturing Boxes, 1 Biogas plant, 1 drying bed,1 polythene recycling facility, Office and other facilities. It has the capacity to receive 22 tons of waste each day and has the potential to produce 4 tons of compost per day. The main objectives of establishing the above project are to Reduce Green House Gas (GHG) emission from the waste sector, Introduction of 3R (Reduce, Reuse and Recycle) concept in to waste management, Improve the soil condition by introducing organic fertilizer to the farmers and finally to build a clean and healthy city in Bangladesh. Apart from the above this facility has also created large number of direct jobs for the poor people living in the city and these jobs are located in the compost plant, in the transportation of waste, and in the distribution of compost.
