Towards UN Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development (2021-2030)

Director General of SACEP Dr. Abas Basir accompanied by Dr. Sivaji Patra ,Senior Programme Officer for South Asian Seas Programme has participated the Leadership Workshop for Developing the Regional Framework for Coastal Vulnerability toward the Safety, Security and Sustainable Development of Member States in the Indian Ocean & Regional Planning Workshop for the Northern/Central Indian Ocean countries as well as ROPME sea area towards the UN Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development (2021-2030), from 6-10, January, 2020, Chennai, India, organized by IOCINDIO.

These workshops held back to back aimed to identify key issues, parameters and methodology for characterising the vulnerability related to specific impacts (erosion, flooding, SLR etc) and also address the various dimensions of vulnerability such as physical, socio-economic, environmental etc which would help the IOCINDIO countries to address their problems in a more specific manner for mitigation purposes.

These workshops also engage and consult the regional ocean community on the developing implementation plan for the UN Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development (2021-2030) and more particularly assess the status of regional ocean research and make recommendations on regional policy requirements vis-à-vis the six societal outcomes: A Clean Ocean; A Healthy and Resilient Ocean; A Predicted Ocean; A Safe Ocean; A Sustainably Harvested and Productive Ocean and; A transparent and Accessible Ocean.

During the workshops, Director General of SACEP highlighted the initiatives undertaken by SACEP under SASP for the next decade and discussed with IOC for further collaboration for the common benefit of the IOCINDIO countries which was principally agreed.
