In a significant step towards addressing the pressing environmental challenges of South Asia, the South Asia Co-operative Environment Programme (SACEP) and the International Centre for Integrated Mountain Development (ICIMOD) signed and renewed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on December 19, 2024. The signing ceremony took place at ICIMOD Headquarters in Kathmandu, Nepal, marking a milestone in regional environmental collaboration.
The MoU leverages the unique strengths of both organizations to foster joint action and bring together countries in the region. ICIMOD, renowned for its cutting-edge science, research, and knowledge dissemination, will complement SACEP’s political leadership and commitment to mobilizing regional cooperation. Together, the two entities aim to tackle critical environmental issues, including climate change, Air Pollution and biodiversity loss, with a unified and science-backed approach.
A central focus of this partnership is the "Snow to Sea" concept, linking mountains to oceans by addressing how pollutants flow through rivers, impacting interconnected ecosystems and communities.
Speaking at the event, Mr. Norbu Wanchuk, Director General of SACEP, emphasized the importance of such partnerships. “This MoU represents a shared vision for a sustainable future. By combining ICIMOD’s scientific expertise with SACEP’s ability to engage political leadership across South Asia, we can drive meaningful change in environmental governance and cooperation.”
Dr. Pema Gyamtsho, Director General of ICIMOD, highlighted the critical need for regional collaboration. “Environmental challenges transcend borders, and so must our solutions. This partnership strengthens our collective resolve to address these challenges and create a resilient future for the people and ecosystems in the region” he stated.
The collaboration under this MoU will prioritize knowledge sharing, capacity building, and joint programs to support regional initiatives. It reflects the commitment of both organizations to harness science and leadership to build sustainable and climate-resilient communities.
