Director-General Dr. Md.Masumur Rahman had a conference call with the senior management team of South Asia Nitrogen Hub, a research programme funded by UKRI-GCRF lead by Prof. Mark Sutton. They discussed the importance of sustainable nitrogen management in the South Asia region and the status of implementation of the South Asia Nitrogen Hub, including key challenges and barriers, particularly issues that arose due to the pandemic. They also discussed future opportunities on raising the profile of the issue in upcoming international events like the COP26 in Glasgow and showcase South Asia’s efforts to address the issue and lead is bringing solutions for sustainable nitrogen management.
The Director-General re-affirmed the full support of SACEP for the South Asia Nitrogen Hub and highlighted the role of research in policy making. He asserted the importance of building research capacity in the region by focusing on young scientists through funded research programme like SANH. He indicated the intention of SACEP to continue playing an active role in the Hub and to help address the issue of nitrogen pollution in the region and help raise the profile internationally.
In addition to Prof.Sutton, who is the Principal Investigator of South Asian Nitrogen Hub, the meeting was attended by Prof. Tapan K Adhya, Co-director (Science) for the South Asian Nitrogen Hub, Prof. Raghuram, Co-Investigator of South Asia Nitrogen Hub and Chair of International Nitrogen Initiative, and Prof. Jeffery Roger, Co-Investigator of South Asian Nitrogen Hub and Dr Mizanur Rahman. Professor Giashuddin Miah, Vice Chancellor of BSMRAU of Bangladesh also joined the meeting.
