Director General of SACEP delivered a speech in the 22nd Global Meeting of the Regional Seas Conventions and Action Plans

Dr. Masumur Rahman, Director General of SACEP has delivered a speech today in the "22nd Global Meeting of the Regional Seas Conventions and Action Plans" in Seychelles (25 - 28 May 2022) He said that SASP has very good regional Sustainable Blue Economy Initiatives. Coral reefs, Mangroves, Seagrass and coastal aquaculture in SAS region are particularly vulnerable to land-based pollution, which not only threatens the health of the ecosystems and the biodiversity contained therein, but also the health and wellbeing of hundreds of millions of people who depend on ocean habitats services for nutrition, livelihoods and a safe living environment. Increasing sediment and nutrient loads have been linked to decline the ocean habitats around the world. Release of excess nutrients into coastal waters causes eutrophication, resulting in macro algae proliferation, algal blooms and the creation of hypoxic ‘dead zones’, which can kill large numbers of organisms.

He also mentioned that SACEP is committed and set the goal as well as targets for appropriate interventions on restoring the coastal and marine biodiversity by formulating regional strategy with a thematic area on Control of Invasive Alien Species with implementing and monitoring frame.
